The first photo is worn platinum, with wavy length through the top and back and the sides faded high to skin. A full beard balances all that length.
The second is dark and curly. The fade arcs past the ear and the curls are left to fall to the nape, which makes it a burst fade mullet.

A burst fade mullet combines a curved fade around the ear with the mullet's length in back. The burst keeps weight at the nape, so the tail looks like it belongs to the cut instead of being left over.

Wavy and curly hair carry a mullet easily because the back holds its shape. Straight hair works once it has enough length to move past the collar. Starting from short hair, expect a few visits where the sides stay tight while the back catches up.

Two parts, two paces.
The faded sides show regrowth long before the back does, because short hair changes the most as it grows. The back only needs shaping now and then while it gets longer. Leave the tail alone too long and it starts to look shaggy instead of deliberate. Ask me in the chair when to come back for yours.

Is every modern mullet a burst fade mullet?+
No. A modern mullet can sit on any fade; the first photo goes high to skin. A burst fade mullet uses the curved burst around the ear, like the second.
Can a mullet look professional?+
A shorter back with a low fade reads much more conservative than a long tail with skin faded high up the sides. You can dial it up or down.
