Hard part.
A hard part is a part you never have to comb in. It is shaved into place, so the line stays put all day.
On a classic side-part cut it sits where your hair naturally parts and separates the top from the faded side. On shorter cuts it becomes an accent instead. In the photo here, the top is short and even, the sides are faded high to skin, and one clean line runs from the temple across the side, just above the ear.

Where the line goes.
Follow your natural part.
Most people wear it on the side their hair already falls toward. Put it where your hair resists and you will fight it every morning. On a comb-over or side part, the line sits higher, roughly above the arch of the eyebrow. On a buzzed or cropped top, it can drop lower and run through the fade itself, as it does here.
Clearest on short sides.
Contrast keeps it visible.
Straight and wavy hair show a shaved part most clearly. On dense curls it is still possible, though the line tends to disappear sooner as the hair grows around it. If you are not sure you will like it, start with a subtle line; it grows out on its own.

LEARN MOREThe line goes first.
It fills in fast.
A line shaved to skin is the first thing to fill in, because there is nothing left to hide the regrowth. If you want the part sharp for an event, book the cut close to the date. Otherwise, let it soften into the rest of the cut until your next visit.
About the part.
What is a hard part haircut?+
Any haircut with a part line shaved in with a razor or trimmer instead of combed. It is usually paired with a side part, a comb-over or a fade.
Does a hard part grow back?+
Yes. It is only shaved, so the hair grows back like the rest of the cut. Nothing about it is permanent.
Can you get a hard part with a fade?+
Yes, and the two suit each other. The fade makes the line stand out, like the high skin fade in the photo.
Which side should my part go on?+
Check which way your hair falls after a shower, or where your cowlick sits at the crown. That side is usually the easiest to keep.
