A low taper trims only the edges: the sideburns, the hair around the ear and the neckline. The sides above keep their length, so the cut looks tidy from the front and never grows a hard line. I cut it in Carlsbad, 36 miles south of Artesia on US 285, about 44 minutes each way by OpenStreetMap routing.
Of all the fades on my menu, this is the one that asks the least of that drive.

A fade that doesn't rush you back.
With so little skin on show, a low taper fuzzes over slowly. The nape is the first spot to lose its edge, and even that is subtle. For someone 44 minutes away, that means a longer stretch between visits than a skin fade would give you. A mid taper, starting up near the temple, shows growth sooner and wants a slightly tighter schedule; I'll tell you which one you're looking at before I start.

July highs in Artesia average 97°F, and about 41 days a year reach 100°F (Open-Meteo, 2023–25). A skin fade is one answer to that. A taper is the other: if you'd rather not have bare scalp out in that sun all summer, it keeps hair on the sides and still cleans up the edges.
