Prom Haircuts for Guys: When to Book and What to Ask For

Book your prom haircut for two to four days before the dance. That's close enough to look fresh in every photo, with a day or two for a razor-sharp fade and line-up to soften so they look natural instead of just-cut. Grab the slot as soon as you know the date, because I work solo and a week only has so many openings.

Here's how to time it, which cuts hold up in pictures, and what to tell me when you sit down.

01 / TIMING

Two to four days out.

Fresh, not raw.

A cut done the morning of prom can look a little too sharp: the line-up is brand new, the skin at the fade is pale and bare, and the whole thing reads freshly cut. Give it a day or two and it settles into looking like your hair.

Wait too long the other way and the crisp edges are gone, especially on a skin fade, where the shortest section shows growth first.

If prom lands on a Saturday, remember the shop is closed on Wednesday. Tuesday or Thursday of that week puts you in the window.

02 / STYLES

Cuts that photograph well.

Clean outlines read on camera.

Low taper

Neat edges, with length kept on the sides. It looks good from every angle, including the side shots you don't get to choose.

Skin fade with a line-up

The high-contrast option. A sharp hairline frames the face in close-ups, and bare sides look clean above a collar and tie.

Textured crop

A forward fringe with texture, like the cut in the photo above. Little to do on the day, which helps when you're also sorting out the suit and the flowers.

Slick back

Swept back over a low taper. Classic with a tux, but it has to hold all night, so practice styling it at home before the day.

03 / WHAT TO ASK FOR

Say it clearly.

A photo does most of the work.

Bring a picture of the cut you want, ideally from more than one angle. Then tell me three things: how short the sides go, how much stays on top, and whether the beard is staying, getting lined up or coming off.

Prom isn't the day to try something drastic for the first time. If you want a big change, get it done a few weeks earlier, live in it, and come back before the dance to sharpen it up.

Want lines cut in? A hair design is a $10 add-on to the cut.

Wearing a tux or a suit? The collar meets the cut at the back of the neck. Every haircut I book finishes with straight razor work at the neckline, so that line is handled.

05 / QUESTIONS

Prom-cut questions.

When should I get my haircut before prom?+

Two to four days before. It looks fresh for photos and has a day or two to settle.

What's a good prom haircut for guys?+

Something with a clean outline: a low taper, a skin fade with a line-up, a textured crop or a slick back. Bring a photo of the one you like.

Can I bring a photo I found online?+

Please do. Any clear photo of the cut works, and a front view with a side view is even more useful.

Should I shave for prom?+

That's up to you. For a smooth face, book the Straight Razor Beard Shave. To keep the beard, the Signature Cut trims or lines it up with the cut.

How much is a prom haircut?+

The same as any other cut: $50 for the Essential, $65 for the Signature, $80 for the Luxury. You pay after the service.
