Your Child's First Haircut: What to Expect at the Barbershop
There's no set age for a child's first haircut. Book it when the hair starts falling in their eyes, curling over the ears or tangling every morning, or when you want them looking tidy for a photo. At my shop in Carlsbad, a first haircut is booked on Booksy like any other appointment, and the Essential Haircut ($50, 40 min) covers a kid's cut.
Here's how to get your child ready, what to bring along, and what happens once they're up in the chair.

When it's time.
Watch the hair, not the calendar.
Hair comes in at its own pace on every child. One toddler has a full head of it early; another barely needs a trim for a long while. The signs are practical: bangs poking at the eyes, hair sitting on the collar, knots that turn brushing into a fight.
Some families plan the first cut around a birthday or holiday photos. That works too. Just book it a few days before the photo rather than the morning of, so nobody is rushed.
If your child is very young, text me at (575) 706-3095 before you book. We can talk through what you're hoping for and whether a first cut makes sense yet.
Prepare at home.
A preview makes the real thing easier.
Tell them what's coming
Describe it in their words: a cape over the shoulders, clippers that hum, a mirror at the end to see the new look. Nothing in the chair should be a surprise.
Pick a good hour
Choose a slot when your child is usually rested and fed. A morning after breakfast tends to go easier than the tail end of a long day. Saturday runs 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM if a weekday won't work.
Bring something to hold
A favorite toy, or a show playing on your phone with the sound low, keeps small hands busy and eyes forward.
Decide how much comes off
A first cut doesn't have to be dramatic. Clearing the hair from the eyes, ears and neck still counts. If you'd like something shaped, like a short fade, save a photo of it to show me.
Dress for clippings
Put your child in a shirt that's easy to swap, or pack a spare. Tiny clippings like to sneak under a collar, and a fresh shirt on the way out keeps the itching out of the car.
BOOKING AND HOURS FAQWhat happens.
Same chair, smaller client.
Your child sits in the same chair every adult does. I work solo, so the person who says hello is the person who cuts their hair from start to finish, and the same barber they'll see next time.
Little kids move. That's normal, and a wiggly first cut is still a good first cut. The ears and the neckline are where stillness matters most, so that's the moment a calm word from you helps.
Stay where your child can see you. When it's done, take the photo. A first haircut only happens once.
There's no need to settle the next visit on the spot. See how this first cut grows, then book again on Booksy whenever the hair starts getting in the way.

When should a baby get a first haircut?+
There's no right age. Book it when the hair gets in the way or bothers your child, or when you want a neater look for photos. For a very young child, text me before you book.
How long does a first haircut take?+
Booksy holds 40 min for the Essential Haircut. That gives a nervous first-timer room to settle in without anyone watching the clock.
Can I stay with my child?+
Yes. Come in with them and stay close, where they can see you the whole time.
What if my child cries?+
It happens, and it's fine. A parent nearby, a favorite toy and a short pause usually settle things.
When do I pay?+
After the cut, in full, by cash, card, Zelle or Cash App.
