Braids for Short Hair: How Long Your Hair Needs to Be
Short hair can be braided once each section is long enough for the strands to cross over each other several times and hold. A rule of thumb you'll often hear is about two inches, but texture matters as much as length, so the surest answer is a photo. Text me one at (575) 706-3095 and I'll tell you if your hair is ready.
Here's what decides it, which braid styles suit shorter hair, and how the 2 hr Braids appointment works once you're there.

What makes a braid hold.
Grip, not just inches.
A braid is three strands crossing over and over, and each crossing locks the one before it. If a section is so short it can only cross once or twice before it runs out, the braid has nothing to hold onto and slips loose.
Texture changes the math. Coily and curly hair grips itself and holds a braid at a shorter length. Straight, fine or very smooth hair slides more and usually needs extra length before a braid stays put.
Length isn't even across the head, either. The top often has more to work with than the nape, so a set might braid easily up front and get tight toward the back. That's one of the things I look for in your photo.
Braids that suit short hair.
Smaller, and close to the scalp.
Bigger, looser braids need more length than tight rows, because each one hangs free instead of anchoring to the scalp. On short hair, smaller and flatter is the safer plan.
Cornrows straight back
Rows braided flat to the scalp, running from the front toward the back. Each row is worked close to the head and picks up hair as it goes, which helps shorter lengths stay in.
Two rows to the crown
Two braids parted down the center and brought together on top, like the set in the photo above. A simple layout that still looks designed.
Braids over short sides
Keep the length on top for the braids and take the sides down short. On shorter hair this puts all the length where the braids need it and keeps everything else clean.

Let the top grow, keep the edges clean.
If the photo shows your hair isn't long enough yet, the plan is patience on top and upkeep everywhere else. Book a haircut that leaves the top alone and only cleans up the edges, so you look sharp while the length comes in.
Tell me at that cut that braids are the goal. Then I know not to take anything off the top, and we can check together how close you're getting.

Short hair, braid questions.
How long does hair need to be for braids?+
Long enough for each section to cross several times and hold. About two inches is a common rule of thumb, but texture changes it. Text me a photo for a straight answer about your hair.
Can men with short hair get braids?+
Often, yes. Cornrows braided close to the scalp hold on shorter lengths than loose braids do.
How long is a braids appointment?+
Booksy holds 2 hr for braids at Divinely Faded.
Why does Booksy say varies for braids?+
Because the price follows the style you pick. A simple set and a detailed one aren't priced the same, so send the style first and we'll settle it by text.
Can straight hair be braided when it's short?+
It can, with enough length. Straight hair slides more than curly hair, so it usually needs to be a bit longer before rows stay neat. Send a photo and I'll tell you.
